I have vived memories of the fire that ravaged the Overbrook School for the Blind around 1960. You could see the blaze from blocks away. We ran up Wynnewood Rd. accross from the convent. All of a sudden from my right I watched Father Ed Esler, the curate at OLL and Sister Amabalis?, RSM, the principal, run accross the lawn right into the building that had the fire. They lead children out of harm's way. Imagine the flames and sister in her long dress and veil which could have easily caught fire. It proved to be a deadly fire, a Fire Lt. was killed. He was taken out in a strecher with Father Hallman (the other OLL curate) at his side. As an 11 year old I admired their courage. It set me a wondering ...

The fireman killed in the OSB fire was the father of Edward Cunningham (PSB Channel 12), Class of 1960.

V. J. Di Stefano, Class of '60

I remember teaching Irish dance to the children at the Overbrook School for the Blind...the only dance most of us knew was Shoe the Donkey -except for the Burkes, Guertins and Karen Donahoue! and who could forget the parish picnic! OLL was a wonderful parish and I feel lucky to have grown up there.

Hello all you refugees from Lancaster Avenue in the 20th Century. I'm going to try to build some comments from the Class of 1955. We had a great time celebrating our 50th Anniversary of our last May Procession. If I can figure out how, I'll post some photos on the Firehouseline Blog.

How about this one ... a delicate young balet dancer (Miss Genevieve Derham, class of 1936 ... later Genevieve Owens [of no small interest to me]) performed a ballet in school to admiring parents. Later, Sr. Celestine took them over to the second floor palor of the now ailing founding pastor, Msgr. Mullin, so that he could enjoy their artistry. Mom is still a registered parishioner having three years ago just left her home, 1212 n. 64th after 78 years to live with the Little Sisters of the Poor at Holy family Home.

Reading the parish history and its description of Msgr Lallou reminded me of serving at the Easter Vigil (10:30 pm before Easter Mass at midnght). Because he was a great liturgist he insisted that the Easter fire be lit naturally; that is wood brushing against wood. The parish scout unit was employed. If memory serves me the long impass was remedied by a fancy ecclesiastical lighter from Father Hallman's pocket.

I remember Sunday morning children's Mass. When we got to 7th & 8th grade, our job was to stop at the blind school and pick up the kids and walk them to church. I'm talking about 1963/64. All the kids sat in church according to grade and if you didn't go to Communion, you knew that Sister was going to ask why...
The kids from the blind school sat in the right wing in their own special section. Imagine just picking the kids up and walking them for blocks to Mass without any adult!! Wouldn't happen today! But I was proud to do it then.

The Parish Picnics were the best. It was the time of year my mom always got a new cake spatula. My dad would always break it trying to make 25 or so pounds of potatoe salad.

Everyone we knew would be packing up their cars early and wanting to get up to the park early to get a good site and good cooler for all their goodies. Driving up to West Point Park always seemed far, and how excited we'd all get when when we would get to the white wall.

Then there were the potatoe sack races, egg toss and who can forget the pie eating contest.

Oh the good old days!

Hello everyone from the class of 1980! I have lived and worked in Norway and Japan and have lived in AZ,CA,HI,NH,MA and RI. I owe my travels to the Sister's of Mercy. If it weren't for the strong math and writing curriculum, I would not have met so many interesting characters in my life. I am fluent in six languages, and Spanish is not one of them! After five bachelors degrees, I am finally getting an MBA.
I remember Mr. Delaney and his smile, the Camp Fire Girl's camping trips, and Saturday afternoon movies at OLL school. I remember singing in the children s choir, names in my memories: Msgr Reilly, Fr. Freeman, Fr. Dowd, Bishop McDevitt, Sr. Rose Morris, Sr. Miriam DeLourdes, Sr Marie Louise, Sr. Mary Mulholland

You recognize, people always manufacture comments when anything is predicted to prove in 2012, like “obviously that is if the faction is still here.” You do effectuate that the Mayans suggest the faction will finish on Dec. 21 (or 23rd)? So in all distinct possibility if anything is accepted to happen in 2012 there is only the slimmest chance that the world will take ended forward of it happens.

Not sure where to post this but I wanted to ask if anyone has heard of National Clicks?

Can someone help me find it?

Overheard some co-workers talking about it all week but didn't have time to ask so I thought I would post it here to see if someone could help me out.

Seems to be getting alot of buzz right now.

Thanks

Last year about 25-30 of the students from the class of 1974 got together on Black Friday for an impromptu reunion. We would like to repeat it again this year. We would like to invite members of the class of 1973 & 1975since many students from our class had friends from those 2 classes as well. There were also a few students from the class of 1974 we were unable to locate. If anyone is interested please contact Angela Dagnelli Cubbler at acubbler@verizon.net for more information.
